This. I retraced the photo of my face from the Gaming Den. Guess the chances I'm going to point a camera at any other kind of place.

In my defense, a lady asked me very nicely to send them to her. I'm not saying it was the smartest thing I have ever done, but I feel you're being a wee bit harsh. I sincerely doubt that you have never done anything against your better judgement for no other reason than someone you were attracted to asked you :p. It's part of the human experience I think.

I know there are naked pictures on the internet. I was a body model for an art class. Pretty much a lot of it is nude sketches. I did have a couple of students bring in their cameras with weird lenses as well. So I have been long reconciled with the fact that my naked bits make art critics cry in pain or pleasure. :D

I looked over my first few posts yesterday, and admittedly, I was feeling a bit aggressive when I first started posting. Don't know why.

Yes. I dated them.

There are some standards that I set for myself that I refuse to cross. For example, I refuse to allow my child out in public with a crusty, unwiped, snotty nose. Parents who tell me that I will never be able to maintain that "high of a standard" can go suck a barrel - I would rub his nose off of his face before I will allow him to be seen like that.

Naked pictures are one of those lines I refuse to cross. If there are naked pictures out there, it's because I was figuratively assaulted by a camera and had no say in the matter (be it because I was two, or because someone broke into my house). If my husband asked me to pose for naked pix, I'd tell him to jump off a cliff for exactly the reason I just cited - and actually I have, and he respects that.
My son makes me laugh. Maybe he'll make you laugh, too.

Another reason to not take naked pics: people are incredible bad at deleting them off their old computers and techies are notoriously good at finding them.

It doesn't take much; running a program to recover files from a deleted partition requires no technical know-how at all.

So, yeah, just don't ever sell your old hard drives.

So, my parents have trotted out the word "study" everytime we talk about politcs' intersection with sexual orientation. Apparently there are studies that say gay couples raise children badwrong, and that being openly gay in the military is a danger to the state.

Would people kindly hand me links to studies that aren't utter bullshit and refute these claims? I've come up with a few but want as many as possible, hopefully enough to bury my parents in an avalanche of paper and a flood of truth of, ironically, biblical proportions.

Failing that, I'd gladly settle for a club of facts.

Well, you should start by slapping them across the face asking them what studies.

Then just say, "Oh, you don't know what studies specifically, you just kinda heard? See, I heard that there were twice as many studies proving that children raised by gay families are usually make twice as much money and are happier than average. Hey look, turns out lying goes both ways."

Guess what? It doesn't matter how many facts or studies or whatever you trot out to your parents - they are still going to believe what they want to believe. There is nothing that you can do to stop people from being willfully ignorant.

Yeah. Once you hit that level of dissonance, if you prove them wrong, it will likely strengthen their belief.

If you're lucky, your studies will just be liberal bullshit. If not, they'll start actually trying to rationalize it to you with a bunch of ignorant opinions.

oh, hell, I know that kind of dissonance, I flat out fucking told them I don't give a shit about their studies that say gay marriage is bad for society, I'd rather people be happy than live in that kind of society.

I'd still like to have some links to give them next time this bullshit comes up, if for no other reason than to drive them into a state of schizophrenic denial of reality.

Well, looking at Wikipedia on gay marriage, there was a section talking about mental health, and the four sources cited are:

^ Price, M. "UPFRONT — Research uncovers the stress created by same-sex marriage bans" in Monitor on Psychology, Volume 40, No. 1, page 10, January 2009. Washington DC: American Psychological Association. [3]

^ Potoczniak, Daniel J.; Aldea, Mirela A.; DeBlaere, Cirleen"Ego identity, social anxiety, social support, and self-concealment in lesbian, gay, and bisexual individuals." Journal of Counseling Psychology, Vol 54(4), October 2007, 447–457.

^ Balsam, Kimberly F.; Mohr, Jonathan J. "Adaptation to sexual orientation stigma: A comparison of bisexual and lesbian/gay adults." Journal of Counseling Psychology, Vol 54(3), July 2007, 306–319.

^ Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health: Lesbian, gay, bisexual individuals risk psychiatric disorders from discriminatory policies

Those aren't links, so I have no idea how handy they are. They didn't have a section saying that gay parents raise their kids goodright, but they do talk about all the negatives stemming from how they're treated and not because they're wrongbad.

Thanks, yeah, I found a news article talking about a correlation between anxiety disorders in non-heteros and gay marriage bans, it was interesting but kind of sad, really.

oh, for a bit of humour. My parents (conservative catholics) believe there is some monolithic gay agenda, and part of their plan is to get as many gay characters into sitcoms as possible (laughable, but technically feasible).
My father asked "have you ever seen a gay villain?" and scoffed when I said yes. That was amusing.

Every time I hear someone talk about the "gay agenda", I always want to ask them if that's anything like the black agenda of the 60s or the women's agenda of the 20s.

If you ever want to melt your brain, go to conservapedia. It's really amazing what people will believe when they want to. A month ago or so, I followed a link to denial, and it lead to a page of liberal denial, with a list of dozens of things. I only made it through three before I decided I needed to close the page.

Oh, I've seen Conservapedia, in fact I made three different accounts to correct factual details. Guess what happened.

And then there's the fact that my parents are basically a walking conservapedia, so...

Also every time gay rights come up, they trot out the "I know plenty of people who used to be gay, I don't know anyone who used to be black" line. My mother can't even separate homosexual people from homosexual sex, so it deeply disturbs her to even talk about gays, because she always gets immediately squicked out by the very mention, essentially.

I've tried, repeatedly, to use race issues to illustrate the inherent wrongness of discrimination of gays, and they maintain it's not the same thing. I actually wished I could hate them to death for their willful ignorance last night, it got so bad.

I have a coworker who considered going to conservapedia solely to troll and get IP-banned, knowing that he can change his IP be resetting his router. The goal is to do this repeatedly and rack up a bunch of different bans to spare poor souls who would otherwise stumble upon that site.

Of course, given the number of addresses out there, I think he'd be busy for a while. :uptosomething:

the sad thing is that conservapedia is trollable by telling the truth.

I'd say this makes it a sane, "good" person's duty to troll them, if it seemed to accomplish anything.

The best way to deal with people like that is to actually meet gay people in a non-overt setting.

It takes a very special person to believe that they are deliberately mean and cruel to other people, but that sort of meanness is much easier when you're dealing with an abstract "them." By rehumanizing gay people, your parents will have to confront the idea that they are being jerks to an entire class of people who don't really deserve it.

Some good TV might include last week's Outlaw which got me all riled up against anti-gay adoption laws, and an episode of 30 Days from a couple of years ago in which a Mormon mother spends a month with a gay couple and their foster kids.

Heh, you people have much more hope for my parents than is warranted. They've met gays and bisexuals in non-overt settings, and they still treat them as, at best, people afflicted with an illness which causes them to do despicable things. They even equated gay marriage to the desire to marry animals and minors last night. Seriously. This is the level of stupidity I am up against.

My mother actually believes I have no values, no investment in society, and no critical thinking skills because I'm a vague-liberal who isn't a hard line catholic.
CatharzGodfoot wrote:Prak, did your parents actually ever tell you what the studies were and where to read about them?
